Amazon’s annual Kindle sales estimated at $4.5 billion
Just how much money does Amazon generate from selling its Kindle eReaders and tablets? It's tough to say because Amazon never releases specific sales figures for its devices. AllThingsD points us to new research from Morgan Stanley that estimates Amazon will sell $4.5 billion worth of Kindle-branded devices this year, a 26% increase from 2012. The Morgan Stanley researchers also think that Kindle sales will total $5 billion next year and $5.5 billion in 2015. Amazon will release the next generation of its 7-inch Kindle Fire this fall and its specs will include a 1,920 x 1,200-pixel display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Texas Instruments OMAP4 4470 processor with PowerVR SGX544 graphics, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Second-generation Kindle Fire HD tablets are also in the works, and they feature some of the most impressive tablet specs we have ever seen. The Pirate Bay unveils web browser that bypasses government, ISP censorship
The Pirate Bay is working hard to help out citizens in the United Kingdom who might soon have their favorite porn sites taken away. The infamous file-sharing site has announced that it has created a new web browser that will bypass governments' and ISPs' attempts at censoring content on the web. The Pirate Bay describes its new PirateBrowser as a "simple one-click browser that circumvents censorship and blockades and makes the site instantly available and accessible" and comes with "no bundled ad-ware, toolbars or other crap, just a Pre-configured Firefox browser." PCMag notes that the browser doesn't offer anonymous browsing, however, so you shouldn't use it if you're trying to surf the web without risk of being identified by government censors or surveillance agenciesThe 1.6 percent of the Internet that NSA “touches” is bigger than it seems
In a memo issued last Friday, the National Security Agency provided details of its ongoing network surveillance operations intended to assuage concerns about its scope, content, and oversight. As Ars' Cyrus Farivar reported, the NSA tried to set the context of its activities with a Carl Sagan-like metaphor: According to figures published by a major tech provider, the Internet carries 1,826 Petabytes of information per day. In its foreign intelligence mission, NSA touches about 1.6 percent of that. However, of the 1.6 percent of the data, only 0.025 percent is actually selected for review. The net effect is that NSA analysts look at 0.00004 percent of the world's traffic in conducting their mission—that's less than one part in a million. Put another way, if a standard basketball court represented the global communications environment, NSA's total collection would be represented by an area smaller than a dime on that basketball court.

Time Warner Cable posts weak Internet numbers, sparks deal talk
Shares still rose 3.2 percent on Thursday as analysts said the cable company's management did not necessarily rule out a merger or takeover during a conference call.
Time Warner Cable, which ranks second to Comcast Corp in the U.S. cable market with about 12 million customers, has attracted takeover interest from John Malone's Liberty Media Corp.
Malone, whose media holding company has an investment in cable provider Charter Communications Inc, recently made an offer for Time Warner Cable but it was rejected, Reuters previously reported.
On Thursday, Chief Executive Glenn Britt, who will be retiring at the end of the year, said the speculation swirling over Time Warner Cable "is really an endorsement of the value of our assets." Britt will be replaced by Time Warner Cable's second in command, Rob Marcus.
Britt said that building value "for the cable industry as a whole through consolidation is a worthwhile endeavor, but our objective is-and will continue to be-to build value for our shareholders."
While Britt's comments are in line with what Time Warner Cable's management has said about consolidation, ISI analyst Vijay Jayant said that executives "seemed open to any M&A opportunity that creates value for Time Warner Cable shareholders" and that the "tone of the call sounds like they are amenable."
Time Warner Cable's new finance chief Artie Minson also stressed that the company did not want to change its investment grade rating or increase its debt leverage.
Moffett Research analyst Craig Moffett said Minson's comments means that Time Warner Cable may not want to borrow more cash to buy back shares. The possibility that TWC might do so has been widely discussed as a possible defensive strategy to fend off a merger.
WEAK NUMBERS Cable operators in the United States are increasingly depending on internet customers for growth as they continue to lose cable TV subscribers and face rising programming costs.
Time Warner Cable said on Thursday it added only 21,000 high-speed internet customers on a net basis in the second quarter. Analysts had expected 55,400, according to research firm StreetAccount.
Moffett called those Internet numbers a "truly awful result."
In contrast, larger rival Comcast said on Wednesday it added 187,000 high-speed Internet customers. Earlier this week, Time Warner Cable said it was raising its monthly rates customers pay to rent modems.
Cable operators are also facing stiff competition from video services offered by satellite TV and phone companies as well as internet-based services such as Netflix Inc.
Time Warner Cable lost about 189,000 video subscribers in the quarter, more than the 174,700 analysts had estimated.
CBS DISPUTE
Marcus, the future CEO, said he had no update on negotiations with CBS, the broadcaster it is locked in a battle with over programming fees. Time Warner Cable blacked out CBS briefly this week in markets such as New York and Los Angeles after talks broke down. The signal was restored but the new deadline for an agreement is Friday at 5 p.m. EDT.
Marcus said only that the company was focused on obtaining reasonable pricing for programming, which will "continue to guide our negotiation."
Net income attributable to the company rose to $481 million, or $1.64 per share, for the second quarter from $452 million, or $1.43 per share, a year earlier.
Excluding items, the company earned $1.69 per share.
Revenue rose about 2.7 percent to $5.55 billion.
Analysts on average had expected a profit of $1.64 per share on revenue of $5.58 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Time Warner shares were up $3.77 or 3.3 percent at $117.68 per share. Shares are up nearly 20 percent this year.

Inside the i-mate Intelegent, the audacious phone that runs Windows 8
Yes—Windows 8 on a phone
It's no wonder the Intelegent made waves when it was announced earlier this year. In addition to the phone itself—which, to be clear, runs the full-blown Windows 8 operating system, not the Windows Phone OS—i-mate promised a docking station that would turn the Intelegent into a desktop workstation. It was all the Windows 8 you could need, all in one place. However, i-mate wasn’t actually demonstrating the device in public.
An exclusive story by Brier Dudley of the Seattle Times showed only product renderings, and claimed that the Intelegent would be “unveiled” at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. (Press materials were prepared by i-mate for the show, but the company didn’t release them publicly.) On i-mate’s website, a short message promised “More information coming soon.” And that message remains on the site today
At the time, PCWorld skipped the story. We had our doubts about the product, and I-mate’s PR department refused to answer questions or set up interviews around Mobile World Congress.

Tablet PC Mobiles, Reviews
The Windows 8 tablet space at launch consisted exclusively of Tegra 3-based or Core i5/i7 ULV-based systems. That changed with the release of Krait and Clover Trail tablets like the ATIV Tab and Acer W510, respectively, but with 7W IVB and AMD Z60 on the very near horizon, we’re seeing the Windows 8 tablet market start to expand and evolve quite rapidly. After a very positive initial experience with the Windows RT slates, I was very eager to get my hands on an x86-based tablet. So when Anand gave me the chance to review one, I jumped at the opportunity.

Information Technology Updates
Next-gen USB SuperSpeed to eliminate power cords
But what Intel hasn’t hyped much is the fact that the upgrade to the USB Super Speed 3.0 spec will also boost power transfer in both directions from 10 watts to 100 watts.
The increase in power means that computer monitors, laptops, and even high definition televisions could be powered through the use of a single USB hub, which would also allow for a bi-directional data flow.
The Thunderbolt peripheral interconnect will soon move from 10Gbps to 20Gbps. The USB SuperSpeed specification will double from 5Gbps to 10Gpbs.
For USB 3.0 (also called SuperSpeed), the data transfer speed increase is evolutionary, but the power transfer is revolutionary, according to Jeff Ravencraft, president of the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF). The USB-IF is a nonprofit organization founded by the developers of the USB specification, which includes Intel, Microsoft, and Hewlett-Packard.
“This is going to change the way computers, peripheral devices, and even HDTVs will not only consume but deliver power,” Ravencraft said. “You can have an HDTV with a USB hub built into it where not only can you exchange data and audio/video, but you can charge all your devices from it.”
For example, a laptop typically requires 65 watts to power it and charge its battery, which leaves additional power for displays or other peripherals. At last year’s Intel Developer’s Forum, the USB-IF demonstrated a USB SuperSpeed hub powering a Lenovo notebook, which was also sending audio/video to two other displays while being charged from the cable. The built-in hub eliminated the need for separate power bricks for each device, Ravencraft said.

Elevator Riders Stand in Mini Social Hierarchies
Elevator Riders Stand in Mini Social Hierarchies:
Do you ever pay attention to where you stand when you ride an elevator? Rebekah Rousi, a Ph.D. student in cognitive science, does. She conducted an elevator study in two of the tallest office buildings Adelaide, Australia, and after 30 rides, found that more senior men stand in the back, younger men stand in the middle and women of all ages stand in front. Not only did people tend to stand in certain locations, but they also directed their gaze in particular areas. Men checked out the other riders as well as themselves, while women did not and only looked in the mirrors when another women was in the elevator car.PHOTOS: World’s Tallest Buildings Rousi writes on her blog, “Men watched the monitors, looked in the side mirrors (in one building) to see themselves, and in the door mirrors (of the other building) to also watch others. Women would watch the monitors and avoid eye contact with other users (unless in conversation) and the mirrors.” It’s not clear why these trends play out. Rousi told NPR’s Robert Krulwich that where people stand may have less to do with power and more to do with shyness. Bold people stand in the back and shy people in front. I tend to stand off to the side because I’m tall and feel like I’m always blocking people’s view. But I also notice in elevators that men tend to hold the door open and allow women to walk through first, so maybe that’s why men stand in back. What do you think?

Personal Manifestos: Never a Good Sign:
Even killers who break the law seem to follow certain rules. Despite how inexplicable any normal person might consider a murderous action, many of them -- particularly the ones that draw media attention -- attempt to justify their behavior and even explain their beliefs in the form of a manifesto. In a case that has garnered headlines nationwide, alleged killer Jodi Arias has reportedly written a manifesto during her time in jail. The contents of the document have not yet been revealed, although prosecutors claim she wrote it "in case she became famous." If criminal history in the past few decades has been any guide, a manifesto isn't usually the hallmark of an innocent person. More often than not, it seems to spell trouble.Solar Energy in Future
3D-Textured Solar Cells Will Be Tested in Space
An experimental 3D-textured solar cell is set to be bolted to the outside of the International Space Station (ISS), where it will experience 16 "sunrises" each day as part of a harsh performance test. A proposal submitted by W. Jud Ready, a professor of materials science at Georgia Tech, to study the performance of his "3D" textured solar cell in space was recently accepted by the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), the organization that manages research onboard the ISS. His solar cell, made from carbon nanotubes coated in an experimental light-absorbing material, will hitch a ride to the ISS sometime next year.http://news.discovery.com/tech/alternative-power-sources/3d-textured-solar-cell-tested-space-130409.htm

hosting your own website at home
How do I host my own website at home?
Warning: running a server of any kind at home is a security risk. Security problems are sometimes found in server software, and these can be exploited to gain access to or damage your files. Your computer must be kept absolutely up to date with Windows Update or the equivalent for your operating system if you intend to run a web server on it. If you choose to run Apache instead of Internet Information Server, you'll need to keep your version of Apache absolutely up to date too. This doesn't eliminate the risk -- it only minimizes it. You run a server at home entirely at your own risk. If you do choose to run a server at home, I recommend finding an old PC on the curb and setting it up as your home server, reducing the danger to your own computer.
